Chapter 11: Cultivation and Domestication

  1. Access Catal Huyuk web sites at two locations: http://www.smm.org/catal  and http://catal.arch.cam.ac.uk/catal/catal.html . At the first site, access, at the minimum, links to 'Mysteries,' 'Artifacts and Present Findings,' 'Frequent Questions,' and 'Zooarchaeology.' At the second site, look at the dialog on the Mother Goddess issue. Answer the following questions: Where was Catal Huyuk located (country and region)? Why is this Neolithic site so important? What interesting finds have been discovered? How did people make a living? What evidence of ritual and religion has been found? What is known-and not known-about the role of women in the culture so far?
  1. Visit Canada’s Virtual History located on the Archaeological Survey of Canada’s website at http://www.civilization.ca/cmc/archeo/cvh/cvh.htm. Choose two regions and briefly compare their history. What are the differences in subsistence strategies, tool use, contact with other groups, cultural traditions? Can you see any similarities in groups which exist in similar habitats?

  2. Visit the site Homes of the Past, http://www.rom.on.ca/digs/longhouse/, an examination of an Iroquoian longhouse. How can archaeological information help archaeologists reconstruct these structures? How did their lifestyle shape their home? What can we learn about their day-to-day life from examining their homes?
