Chapter 10: Homo sapiens and the Upper Paleolithic
- To experience some of the world's most magnificent Upper Paleolithic art, access the site of the French Ministry of Culture at http://www.culture.gouv.fr/culture/arcnat/chauvet/en (presented in English as well as French). Take a virtual tour of Chauvet cave, discovered in 1994, which contains the earliest cave art so far dated. Answer the following questions after touring the site: When and by whom was the cave discovered? How were the drawings proved authentic? What animals are represented here? What tool-making tradition is associated with the cave? When were the paintings done? What is the significance of Chauvet?
