Chapter 4: Monkeys, Apes and Humans: The Modern Primates

  1. First, read a little about Birute Galdikas by visiting her science.ca profile at http://www.science.ca/scientists/scientistprofile.php?pID=7. She is a famous Canadian primatologist who has spent her career studying orangutans in Borneo. Next, visit her science.ca activity at http://www.science.ca/scientists/viewactivity.php?aID=5 and try your hand at observing a focal animal.
  2. The Canadian Great Ape alliance http://www.great-apes.com/index.htm is a non-profit group dedicated to protecting the Great Ape species in the world. What is bushmeat? How do you think these species can be preserved?

  3. Go to the e-Skeletons Project website at http://www.eskeletons.org and visually compare human, baboon, gorilla and chimpanzee skeletons and report on your findings. For example, how do the mandibles and dentition differ between these species? What do you see as the most striking similarities or differences between any two of the above species you choose to compare?
