  1. Why do you think early peoples adopted agriculture? Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of adopting an agricultural way of life, using the Iroquoian peoples as an example.
  2. How can the domestication of plants and animals have a positive impact on human development? How can archaeologists distinguish between domesticated and wild species of plants and animals?
  3. How has our understanding about the adoption of an agricultural way of life changed in the past few years? What new sampling techniques or new discoveries have allowed us to study this problem in more detail?
  4. Compare the agricultural strategies and resources of New World ‘Neolithic’ peoples to Old World Neolithic peoples. What similarities and differences do you see? What explanations can you see for these differences?
  5. Why did items like housing, clothing, pottery, and such not fully develop before the advent of agriculture? What other cultural items developed as a result of domestication and settlement?
